Boston Theatre Conference 2008
Boston Theatre: RAISING OUR STANDARD
Saturday, August 9, 2008
Arsenal Center for the Arts, Watertown
On Saturday, August 9, 2008, the theatre community will convene at the Boston Theatre Conference for a discussion entitled “Boston Theatre: Raising Our Standard”. The community will have the opportunity to consider issues facing the Boston Theatre community today, explore opportunities and confront challenges, connect with old friends and make new ones, inspire and be inspired, and celebrate Boston theatre. In February 2008, StageSource conducted a survey Snapshot of Metro Boston Theatre and issues raised in responses will launch our discussions at the Boston Theatre Conference (see below for a summary of the Snapshot).
What is the level of artistic product on our stages? Are we wholly satisfied with where we are as a community right now? If not, what do we need to get to the next level? What has worked for you – what is your success story? What do you consider success? Are our actors, directors, playwrights and designers continuing to grow? Do we train beyond college? What are our opportunities? Are we taking strides to go beyond? What next for the Boston Theatre Community?
Tell your personal story at the Boston Theatre Conference. Share your story of a project that you view as successful, discuss your challenges and opportunities, tell us why you do the theatre work that you do. Join your colleagues, friends and fellow theatre artists for Boston Theatre: Raising Our Standard.
The 2008 Conference will include panels, breakout sessions and featured guests discussing these issues important to the Greater Boston theatre community. In 2004 and 2006, HUNDREDS of aspiring and professional theatre artists and members of theatre companies gathered for the past two Boston Theatre Conferences for inspiring days. StageSource is excited to host the Boston Theatre Conference again in 2008.

Snapshot of Metro Boston Theatre Community
Summarized by Jeff Poulos, StageSource Executive Director, May 2008
In February 2008, StageSource distributed two online surveys, one to individual constituents (actors, directors, designers, playwrights, production and administrative theatre personnel) and one to theatre companies of the Metro Boston Theatre Community. The surveys were intended to take a snapshot of the theatre community at a given moment in time focusing on issues of training, working in the theatre, union and association affiliations, earnings and benefits, employment, facilities, productions, challenges and opportunities facing individuals and theatre companies in the theatre community, and artistic and personal growth in the next five years and what is needed to fulfill goals.
There were 645 individual respondents (75% of which are StageSource members), and 54 theatre companies responded. We provide here a summary of responses collected to help launch our discussion at the Boston Theatre Conference on Saturday, August 9, 2008.
