| BTW CANCELS PRODUCTION OF THE CRUCIBLE Boston Theatre Works calls off April 2008 production of The Crucible [Boston, MA] Boston Theatre Works announced today that it will cancel its April 3-26 production of The Crucible. The company will use this time to explore new funding sources and work on a long-term strategy to ensure the company’s place in the Boston theatrical scene. Following its successful, critically acclaimed run of Angels In America, Boston Theatre Works will take a brief hiatus and return in May with Love Kills, a world premiere “emo-rock musical.” “This is a very difficult economy for an independent theatre company to thrive in,” says Boston Theatre Works Artistic Director Jason Southerland. “The artistic and financial success of Angels In America reminded us that Boston Theatre Works still has a significant contribution to make to the artistic landscape of this city, but we need to re-think the way we do business in order to sustain the organization. This was an incredibly difficult decision to make and the Board considered every other option short of canceling before taking this step. We look forward to continuing BTW’s tradition of creativity with our production of Love Kills.” Currently in its 10th season, Boston Theatre Works is committed to creating innovative, intimate productions of classic works, as well as presenting original pieces by new playwrights. The company also runs several programs to engage new audiences including Stages of Discovery, a middle and high school program that routinely brings 2,000 students to our contemporary productions of classic plays and sends artists and educators to dozens of schools annually. Single tickets for The Crucible had not yet gone on sale. Subscribers will be offered several options including partial refund in light of cancellation. Subscribers should contact Boston Theatre Works at 617-728-4321 for more information. updated February 25, 2008 Previous Page Back to News Next Page |
