Foothills Theatre Company Announces 2008-2009 Season!
March, 2008 – WORCESTER, MA –Foothills Theatre Company is proud to announce its exhilarating lineup for 2008-2009! The 34th season is filled with exciting and diverse shows including a classic romantic comedy, two acclaimed, award-winning contemporary plays as well as upbeat and energizing musicals. This season is sure to be one that people will be talking about for some time!
The season kicks off with Moonlight and Magnolias (Sept. 27 to Oct. 19), a comedic take on re-writing Gone with the Wind. When movie producer David O. Selznick decides that the screenplay for Gone with the Wind just isn’t right he traps director Victor Fleming and screenwriter Ben Hecht in his office for a week to re-write the screenplay. Only one problem: neither Fleming nor Hecht has ever read the book. What follows is a funny, fact-based take on the making of a classic.
Just in time for baseball playoff season, the 2003 Tony Award winner for Best Play,
Take Me Out (Oct.25 to Nov. 16). When the young, rich, famous, talented, and handsome star center fielder of the New York Empires casually announces to his teammates and the press that he is gay, he is so convinced of his popularity he assumes everyone will readily accept the news. He is wrong. This much talked about story sizzles with humor, passion, and an overwhelming affection for the game. Take Me Out contains mature subject matter, course language, and nudity.
The New Year begins as Foothills takes another look at a music icon from the past, Elvis, in Idols of the King (Jan. 10 to Feb. 1). Based on actual stories, Idols is a musical celebration of Elvis Presley and the many fans whose lives he influenced. Told in hilarious and touching vignettes as his fans travel to Vegas to catch him in concert, the stories are framed by the King in Concert as Elvis, backed by his musicians, sings 16 of his greatest hits including Heartbreak Hotel, Jailhouse Rock, Love Me Tender, Can’t Help Falling in Love, Burning Love, and more.
Foothills follows with a classic from the ‘50s, the romantic comedy The Rainmaker (Feb. 7 to March 1). As a paralyzing drought holds the West in its spell, a father and his two sons lose hope that the only female in the home, plain, ‘old-maid’ Lizzie, will ever find a husband. Into their parched lives comes a colorful and picaresque ‘rainmaker’ who claims he can make the skies pour down water…for a price. Love blossoms as the rainmaker turns his magic on Lizzie and convinces her of her own special beauty in this humorous and heartwarming tale.
In March, the Foothills stage will become the infamous Chicken Ranch when we present The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas (March 14 to April 5) This exuberant and bawdy musical comedy recounts a real-life story of small-town vice, statewide political sidestepping, and that Great American Pastime, sex. Scored with a twangy country western sound, this high energy romp will have you pulling on your cowboy boots and stompin’ along!
April brings the Tony Award and Pulitzer prize-winning modern classic, Doubt.(April 18 to May 10) The most acclaimed Broadway play of recent years takes the audience to 1964 as Sister Aloysius, a formidable school principal, takes matters into her own hands when she suspects the young Father Flynn of improper relations with one of the students. Doubt is a gripping story of suspicion that is less about scandal than about questions of moral certainty.
You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown (May 16 to June 7) is a musical that the whole family can enjoy! Set in ‘an average day in the life of the Peanuts gang`, this lively musical comedy follows Charlie Brown, Lucy, Linus, Sally, Schroeder, and a beagle named Snoopy as they navigate their way through the joys and pitfalls of childhood: chaotic baseball games, unrequited valentines, World War One flying beagles, and five cent psychiatry.
So come and enjoy a history of 34 years of amazing dramas, musicals, and classics conveniently located in downtown Worcester. For more information, or to become a subscriber, call the box office at 508-754-4018 or visit our website at www.foothillstheatre.com
