ART ANNOUNCES 2008-2009 SEASON

A note from A.R.T. Acting Artistic Director Gideon Lester:

Welcome to the 2008-09 Season at the A.R.T.!

You are invited to join us for seven extraordinary evenings at the theatre.

On our Loeb stage we begin with Anna Deavere Smith’s exploration of the resilience and vulnerability of the human body and the resourcefulness of the human spirit, Let Me Down Easy.

Just in time for the holidays we welcome Charlie Chaplin’s granddaughter, Aurélia Thierrée, in Aurélia’s Oratorio, a spellbinding evening of illusion and magic that’s perfect for the entire family.

The new year begins with the first of several well-known masterpieces: One of our most popular directors, János Szász returns to stage Chekhov’s The Seagull; followed by Beckett’s lyrical and deeply moving Endgame, directed by our own Marcus Stern; and David Mamet’s hysterical and irreverent courtroom farce Romance, staged by long-time Mamet collaborator and director of the A.R.T. Institute, Scott Zigler

Our Zero Arrow stage will host two world premieres next season, from two lauded young women playwrights.

In October we will stage Anne Washburn’s The Communist Dracula Pageant. Our own election season is the perfect backdrop for this wild and offbeat satire that blends the rule of the Ceaucescus, the myth of Dracula, and the forging of national identity.

Spring at Zero Arrow brings Christine Evans’ Trojan Barbie. Her contemporary reimagining of Euripides’ Trojan Women is an epic war story with a most unlikely heroine, who always looks on the bright side even as past and present collide about her.

Join us for a season of tremendous range, of new plays and classics, comedy and drama, great writing and virtuosic performances.  We look forward to welcoming you to the theatre!
