Over Twenty
Boston Theaters Offer Free Night of Theater
Boston Joins Initiative with Fifteen Cities Across the Country

ArtsBoston, StageSource and Theater Communications Group (TCG) are pleased to announce that Free Night of Theater 2006, an unprecedented campaign to attract new audiences to live theater, will open on Thursday, October 19, 2006 at over 20 theaters in Greater Boston as well as in fifteen communities across the country.  On that night theatergoers from Boston to Los Angeles and from Atlanta to Seattle will attend performances being presented by over 400 selected theaters free of charge.

Free Night of Theater will take place on Thursday, October 19, 2006 at 24 theaters in Greater Boston (some theaters will participate on alternative date between October 20 and November 5, 2006).  Theater-goers will be able to reserve two free tickets for any participating theater at which they have not previously attended. Ticket reservations will begin on October 5, 2006 at 12 noon – 1:30 pm in person at the BosTix ticket booths at Faneuil Hall and Copley Square. Beginning at 4:00 pm, patrons will be able to reserve tickets online at ArtsBoston's website, www.ArtsBoston.org.  Further Information about Free Night of Theater is available at www.artsboston.org.

Free Night of Theater is a wonderful way to open the theater doors to new audiences by encouraging them to try something different,” stated Catherine Peterson, ArtsBoston's Executive Director.  “We're looking forward to a successful night that expands the already thriving community of those who love the arts.” StageSource Executive Director Jeff Poulos added, “Boston has established itself as a booming theatre town as demonstrated by the varied and rich offerings taking place during Free Night of Theater. Participating in this national program alongside San Francisco, Los Angeles, Seattle and many other cities, Boston provides exciting and entertaining opportunities for people living and working in our communities and counts itself as a wonderful cultural destination.”

Free Night of Theater was conceived at TCG's National Conference in 2003 as a way to remove perceived barriers that have historically prevented audiences from attending not-for-profit theater. An estimated 80% of last year's attendees were first-time theatergoers and they were enthusiastically welcomed by their fellow audience members. Recent attendance research gathered by Shugoll Research reports that over 33% of last year's first-time theatergoers purchased tickets to another performance following their Free Night experience.  In fact, 98% of attendees to the 2005 program reported that they would take part in Free Night of Theater 2006.

Free Night of Theater is a national program of TCG presented locally by ArtsBoston and StageSource, the Greater Boston Theater Alliance.

ArtsBoston, founded in 1975, is Boston's largest arts service organization, with a budget of over $1 million and a mission to promote the performing arts in Greater Boston. ArtsBoston provides a dynamic range of ticketing, marketing and capacity-building programs that increase revenue, expand audiences and enhance professional development to over 170 theater, music and dance member groups. Primary ArtsBoston programs include: the BosTix booths at Faneuil Hall and Copley Square; ArtsMail, offering advance discount tickets through a free catalog and online at www.artsboston.org; and Member Services, which include technical assistance, cost-saving advertising and marketing services, and professional development workshops.

StageSource, The Greater Boston Theater Alliance, provides leadership and services to advance the art of theater in the Greater Boston region.  Founded in 1985, our mission is to unite theater artists, theater companies and related organizations in vision and goals that inspire and empower our community to realize its greatest artistic potential. Current membership stands at over 2,000 individual theater artists working both onstage and off.  Our membership resides in all six New England states and New York.  Our 220 producer members operate from Western Massachusetts to upstate Maine.  Their repertoire ranges from classical theater to experimental and they range in size from the largest institutional theaters to smaller start-up and community theater companies.  The audiences they serve are as diverse as their repertoire.

Theater Communications Group (TCG), the national organization for the American theater, offers a wide array of services in line with its mission: to strengthen, nurture and promote the professional not-for-profit American theater.  Artistic programs support theaters and theater artists by awarding $2.7 million in grants annually, and offer career development programs for artists.  Management programs provide professional development opportunities for theater leaders through workshops, conferences, forums and publications, as well as industry research on the finances and practices of the American not-for-profit theater. Advocacy, conducted in conjunction with the dance, presenting, opera and symphony orchestra fields, includes guiding lobbying efforts and providing theaters with timely alerts about legislative developments.  The country's leading independent press specializing in dramatic literature, TCG's publications include American Theater magazine, the ArtSEARCH employment bulletin, plays, translations and theater reference books. As the U.S. Center of UNESCO's International Theater Institute, a worldwide network, TCG supports cross-cultural exchange through travel grants and other assistance to traveling theater professionals.  Through these programs, TCG seeks to increase the organizational efficiency of its member theaters, cultivate and celebrate the artistic talent and achievements of the field, and promote a larger public understanding of and appreciation for the theater field.  TCG serves over 430 member theaters nationwide.  More information about TCG is available at www.tcg.org.
