DEVANAUGHN ANNOUNCES SEASON

Devanaughn Theatre Announces Its 5th Anniversary Season!

October 12-29, 2006 - By the Bog of Cats, by Marina Carr, directed by Rose Carlson

“… a passionate enactment of exile and alienation.” ~ Cathy Leeney, Irish Scholar

The season explodes with a courageous work by one of Ireland's most provocative and haunting young writers. BY THE BOG OF CATS… boasts the stunning language of Irish tragicomedy, woven into the harsh reality of a truly complicated family.  Set in the Irish midlands, the play explores powerful themes surrounding the TRAVELLER COMMUNITY, also known as the “tinkers” or “gypsies” of Ireland.  Playwright MARINA CARR is unflinching in her dissection of what it means to call a place “home” and the clashing rivalries between those who have claimed sovereignty of a region and those who belong to it in their bones.

February 1 – 18, 2007 - How I Learned to Drive, by Paula Vogel, directed by Dani Duggan
“Superb comic drama... haunting... a lovely, harrowing guide to the crippling persistence of one woman's memories." ~ NY Times
Vogel's masterpiece  is a wildly funny, surprising and devastating tale of survival as seen through the lens of a troubling relationship between a young girl and an older man.  The story of a woman who learns the rules of the road and life from behind the wheel.

April 19-May 6, 2007 - [sic] by Melissa James Gibson, directed by Rose Carlson
"A work that is concerned… with the sound and power of language…  The most alluring new play to open in New York this season.” ~ NY Times

An exciting contemporary work, a modern-day tale of friendship and relationship, set in a disjointed urban life… young, ambitious neighbors come together in a series of apartment hallways to discuss, flirt, argue, and plan their futures with unequal shares of deep hopefulness and abject despair.  Boasting exhilarating structural inventiveness: line breaks more akin to poetry, internal capitalizations, and virtual lack of punctuation.

The  5th Annual  Dragonfly Festival - 17 New Plays… Burst Into Life…Startle the Senses… Ignite the Imagination…

The finale to another glorious season is Devanaughn's 19th production and their trademark, The 5th ANNUAL DRAGONFLY FESTIVAL from May 10-20, 2007.  This glorious annual event celebrates playwrights of extraordinary talent and their inventive new works: dark to delirious, hilarious to sublime.  Over 60 playwrights, directors, and actors come together to present a professional and diverse festival, unlike anything else on the Boston theatre scene.

All at the Piano Factory, 791 Tremont Street, in Boston's historic South End.  More info and an unbelievable subscription offer of $57 at www.devtheatre.com!
