Artistic director Shawn LaCount comments that the season continues to push Company One in its artistic capacity, while hopefully expanding the company's already diverse audience base. "We're very excited about our tenth season," says LaCount. "We'll be working at the next level artistically while remaining true to our mission. It will be a celebration of everything that's gone into the company over the past ten years."
Company One began in 1998 with a group of college students mounting David Ives' All in the Timing in the now-defunct Leland Center. Now, the company is turning 10 and has garnered a slew of local awards and nominations for its work. Known for its provocative programming, as well as its commitment to diversity, Company One has brought many plays to Boston which have stirred the cultural conscience of the city. These works have included lesser-known pieces by renowned playwrights such as Ping Chong (TRUTH & BEAUTY), Tennessee Williams (OUT CRY), and Tony Kushner (THE ILLUSION); daring plays straight from New York such as AFTER ASHLEY, MR. MARMALADE, & JESUS HOPPED THE ‘A' TRAIN; and stunning world premieres of original Boston based playwrights including John ADEkoje (SIX ROUNDS / SIX LESSONS, LOVE JONES) and Kirsten Greenidge (103 WITHIN THE VEIL & A MORE PERFECT UNION, and THE GIBSON GIRL).
The company has also earned a reputation for cultivating a diverse, non-traditional theatre audience, most notably people of color and youth from the City of Boston. This has been reported in major press outlets such as The Boston Globe and is reflected in the company's mission of "changing the face of Boston theatre."
"Our tenth season reflects very strongly the commitment we've made as a company to program diverse, political, edgy theatre that is accessible to all," remarks LaCount.
