December 2, 2008

Boston Center for the Arts Appoints New Executive Director

Boston – The Board of Directors of the Boston Center for the Arts announced today that Veronique Le Melle is the new Executive Director of the historic BCA arts complex in the South End.  After a national search, conducted with the executive search firm Albert Hall & Associates, LLC, Ms. Le Melle will assume active leadership of the region’s leading visual and performing arts center just after the New Year.

“With our exciting hire of Veronique, the BCA recognizes that Boston continues its rise as a center of artistic creativity and activity in the country,” said Board Chair Philip Lovejoy.  “Her most recent work, as Executive Director of the Louisiana Division of the Arts and Director of the Jamaica Center for Arts & Learning, Inc. (Queens, NY), are tacit recognition that the BCA is an important partnership of the public and private in the arts and cultural affairs.”  Ms. Le Melle has also served as Director of Culture & Tourism in the Queens (NY) Borough President’s Office.

A graduate of Colorado College, Ms. Le Melle holds a Masters in Performing Arts Administration from Brooklyn College and a Masters in Public Policy from Columbia University. A former National Board Member of Grant Makers in the Arts, she has also held Board positions on the Arts and Business Council and Arttable.

“This is a great opportunity in a great city,” Ms. Le Melle said.  “I share the vision of the BCA as the center of the arts not only in Boston but for the region.  The BCA plays a key role in creating true vitality in the visual and performing arts and I am proud to join the staff, the Board, our artist partners and our audiences in bringing new energy and connections to the heart of the city.”

Over ¼ million people annually visit the Boston Center for the Arts and its public programs including the historic Cyclorama, the BCA Resident Theatre Companies and the Mills Gallery.  The BCA is the not-for-profit performing and visual arts complex that supports working artists to create, perform and exhibit new works; develops new audiences; and connects the arts to residents and communities of the city.
