UPDATE: February 4, 2010
White Space Update -- FCC Issues Notice to Vacate 700 MHz Band
On January 15, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) issued an Order and a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking making effective their call for wireless microphone users to vacate the 700 MHz spectrum by June 12, 2010. Performing arts organizations using wireless microphones must comply with the FCC's order and leave the 700 MHz Band as soon as possible. To aid in this process, the FCC has made available an online resource for wireless microphone users that includes a Manufacturers Equipment list of affected wireless microphone systems and a Frequently Asked Questions section.
If you have not already done so, be sure to confirm the frequencies on which your wireless microphones operate. If they operate in the 700 MHz Band, consult the above link to verify if your equipment can be modified to operate outside of the affected spectrum. Depending on make and model, some of your equipment could be re-banded with a new frequency range, so it is important to begin this process immediately.
The Performing Arts Alliance urges you to spread the word about the June 12 deadline to vacate the 700 MHz Band to any colleagues affected by this decision. As the FCC moves forward to consider how wireless microphones should be regulated in the future, the Performing Arts Alliance will continue to communicate with the agency that nonprofit performing arts organizations must be able to operate wireless microphones free from interference in a cost effective manner.
