THEATRE COMMUNITY REMEMBERS LESLEY CHAPMAN

We are sorry to announce that our community lost a valued member this week.  Lesley Chapman, the former artistic director of The Theatre Cooperative, passed away early Tuesday, April 7, 2009 at Beth Israel Hospital.

The memorial service for Lesley is set for this Sunday, April 19th, at 4:00 pm.  The service will be held at Congregation Dorshei Tzedek, 60 Highland Street, West Newton, 02465 (in the Second Church of Newton).

As the artistic director of The Theatre Cooperative, Lesley was a champion of local artists.  The Theatre Cooperative served as a place of artistic growth for many local actors, directors, designers, playwrights, and technicians.  Artists had many opportunities to have their work seen at The Theatre Cooperative; these included the ten minute play series Ritalin Readings, the New Play Series, Shakespeare in the Raw, and Main Stage productions.  Lesley also had a commitment to strong, challenging work—the theater won an Elliot Norton award in 2003 for an Outstanding Production by a Local Fringe Company for Spinning into Butter, which Lesley directed.  Her commitment to Boston’s artists, and her contributions to our community will be sorely missed.
