To Be Or Not To Be A Non-Profit Theatre

To Be or Not To Be: a discussion on the pros and cons of becoming a Non-Profit Theatre.

One of the first decisions to make when you decide to produce a work is whether to become a non profit to finance the project. There are many considerations that play (pun intended) into your decision and the answers to your many questions are not always apparent, consistent or easy to find.  There is also a lot of misinformation in the industry.  StageSource wants to help with this important decision and process so please join Jim Grace (Executive Director of the Arts and Business Council and its VLA program) and Anita Lauricella (Interim Executive Director of StageSource) as they discuss the pros and cons of becoming a not-for-profit tax-exempt entity.  The discussion will cover the following topics:

  • Advantages, including tax
  • Disadvantages 
  • Filings
  • Budgets and finances
  • Articles of Organization and By-laws
  • Forming a board and board management
  • Alternative ways to fundraise, including fiscal agency
