Coaching will be provides by professional directors and acting coaches like Tony Estrella (Artistic Director of The Gamm Theatre) and Michael Bobbitt (Artistic Director of New Repertory Theatre).



9:30 am to 10:00 am: Check-in

10:00 am to 11:00 am: A panel discussion with two audition coaches about the ins and outs of a successful audition. Topics will include: choosing material, knowing your "type," how to slate, and more!

11:00 am to 1:00 pm: Coaches will work with individual actors in front of the group to showcase key audition techniques. Actors should come prepared with a memorized contemporary monologue.

1:00 pm to 2:00 pm: LUNCH. You may go out for a quick bite or pack a lunch and bring it with you. We encourage you to use this time as a networking opportunity to get to know your fellow actors and StageSource staff.

2:00 pm to 4:00 pm: Actors will choose one of two groups - either Auditioning for Musical Theatre OR Auditioning for Classical/Shakespearean Theatre.
You will choose your area of focus when registering and should come prepared with either a short musical audition piece, or a classical monologue.
**For this workshop, there are no specific time limits on material but we do ask that you keep your selection short (1-2 minutes) so that there is ample time for coaching.

4:00 pm to 5:00 pm: A panel discussion with our two afternoon coaches. You are invited to bring your headshot and resume for review and discussion.

TONY ESTRELLA (Contemporary Coach) is the Artistic Director of The Gamm Theatre.  Tony has been an actor, director, writer and producer with The Gamm for more than 20 years. Since his first show with the company (Antony & Cleopatra) in 1996, he has appeared in or directed over 70 productions. His favorite roles include Shannon in The Night of the Iguana, Hamlet in Hamlet, Moe Axelrod in Awake and Sing, Valere in La Bete, Flote in Red Noses, Katurian in The Pillowman, Teach in American Buffalo, and Vanya in Uncle Vanya. Directorial highlights include True West, Festen, Sara Kane’s 4:48 Psychosis, A Streetcar Named Desire, the U.S. premiere of Howard Brenton’s Paul, John Logan’s Red, and the U.S. premiere of Sarah Waters’ The Night Watch. Tony has also written several works for The Gamm stage including adaptations of Dylan Thomas’ A Child’s Christmas in Wales, Henrik Ibsen’s A Doll’s House and Hedda Gabler, and Barry Unsworth’s acclaimed novel Morality Play. His film credits include appearances in Martin Scorsese’s The Departed, Kenneth Lonergan’s Manchester by the Sea, Greta Gerwig’s Little Women, and he just finished filming The Good House, which will be released in 2020. He is the recipient of numerous recognitions including the Claiborne Pell Award for Excellence in the Arts. Tony is a longtime member of the theater faculty at his alma mater, University of Rhode Island.

SUMMER L. WILLIAMS (Contemporary Coach) is a Co-Founder and Associate Artistic Director of Company One Theatre in Boston, and award-winning director. Her most recent directing credits include School Girls, or The African Mean Girls Play at SpeakEasy Stage Company, Miss You Like Hell by Quiara Alegría Hudes and Erin McKeown with Company One Theatre and OBERON at American Repertory Theater, the World Premiere of Leftovers by Josh Wilder with Company One Theatre, Wig Out! by Tarell Alvin McCraney with Company One and OBERON at A.R.T.; Smart People at Kitchen Theatre Company in Ithaca, NY and Geva Theater in Rochester, NY; Barbecue at Lyric Stage Company of Boston—Winner of the 2018 Elliot Norton Award for Outstanding Director; Revolt. She Said. CHRISTINE HAMEL (Shakespeare Coach) is an actor, voice & text coach, director, and writer; and she currently serves as Head of the BFA Acting Program at Boston University School of Theatre where she is an Assistant Professor of Voice & Acting. Relating to her research interest in the embodied voice and its social, political, and ethical aspects, Christine founded the Femina Shakes initiative at Boston University, which commits to feminist retellings of Shakespeare and invites actors to play within a wide range of gender identities unconstrained by the limitations of conventional gender narratives, and for which she has directed Julius Caesar, Titus Andronicus, Twelfth Night, Hamlet, and Richard III. Christine’s work as a voice and dialect coach is known extensively in the region and beyond, having worked with Actors’ Shakespeare Project (most recently on the world premiere of Migdalia Cruz’ translation of Macbeth), Huntington Theatre Company, Potomac Theatre Project, Merrimack Repertory Theatre, New Repertory Theatre, Company One, and many others. Christine is a Designated Linklater Voice Teacher, holds a Teacher Training Certificate in the Michael Chekhov acting technique, and is a proud member of Actors’ Equity. BA, Williams College, MFA, Boston University.

MICHAEL J. BOBBITT (Musical Theater Coachis the Artistic Director at New Repertory Theatre, as well as an arts leader, director, choreographer, and playwright. He served as Artistic Director for Adventure Theatre-MTC in Maryland since 2007, where he led the organization to be a respected theatre/training company in the DC region, as well as a nationally influential professional Theatre for Young Audiences. He led a merger with Musical Theater Center, increased the organizational budget and audience, commissioned new works by noted playwrights, transferred two shows to Off-Broadway, built an academy, and earned dozens of Helen Hayes Award Nominations including eight wins.
