Self-Care for Non-Black Allies

NOTE: Allyship is a lifelong commitment that does not end when the hashtags stop trending and the timeline goes “back to normal.” Remember: this is not just a moment; this is a movement.

"White allies: Self-care is very important. But are you using self-care as a way to conserve your energy, or are you using it to escape the current moment? Cuz BIPOC don't get to escape. Remember that." — @DavJCastillo

What is Burnout?

"Burnout is the experience of physical, emotional, and mental exhaustion often caused by longterm involvement in emotionally demanding situations

Burnout can occur because White Folks and NBPOC Don't typically think about their privilege or relation to race. To prevent burnout, and to keep the movement alive, we’ve gathered some tips and resources to help you stay grounded

Remember: Your feelings are valid

  1. Identify your feelings (anger, hypervigilance, loneliness, numbness, overstimulation, hopelessness, etc.)
  2. Acknowledge that none of these feelings are “overreactions”
  3. Be patient with yourself and seek community in a trusted friend or family member

Take Things One Step at a Time

Create a Long-Term Plan of Education.
Learning is a lifelong process, and you cannot learn everything in one day (and that is okay!)

Organize your resources on Instagram under “Saved”

Create a shopping cart on an online bookstore
(preferably Black owned)

Save free PDFs on Google Drive in a “To Read” and “Finished Texts” folder

Use Google Calendar to set daily reminders and long-term goals

Take breaks, and remember to breathe.

"THE BEAUTY OF ANTI-RACISM IS THAT YOU DON'T HAVE TO PRETEND TO BE FREE OF RACISM TO BE AN ANTI-RACIST.  ANTI-RACISM IS THE COMMITMENT TO FIGHT RACISM WHEREVER YOU FIND IT, INCLUDING IN YOURSELF.  AND IT'S THE ONLY WAY FORWARD." —Ijeoma Oluo
