The Work of New Work: Developing a Play by Producing It

What does great new play collaboration look like? What structures can be part of a new play development process and why? What do these three pivotal roles need to know about each other? What role do productions serve in the new play process? Playwrights, dramaturgs and directors, working at many different scales, gather to talk about these questions, share tools and experiences, offer areas of exploration for bringing a new script to production for the first (or second or third) time.

Your board are the best ambassadors for telling your organization's story. What can you do to help them with that? Jim Grace from the Arts & Business Council and Anita Lauricella from Lauricella and Associates will lead this workshop.






Collaboration Connections

Anne Dunning will lead a panel discussion about collaborations and partnerships--what is the difference? What are the pitfalls, and what are the opportunities for deepening the work? Michael Maso (Huntington Theatre Company), Cliff Odle (playwright), Shawn LaCount (Company One) and Georgia Lyman (Outside the Box) will be part of the discussion. Then we will open it up to a couple of pitches from folks looking for collaborators.






Accessibility: A Model for Collaboration On Both Sides of the Curtain

Chris Robinson will lead a panel discussion about access in the arts and what that means. Accessibility in the theatre is realized best when it is "built-in" rather than "bolted-on" after the fact. What does it cost? How much are we losing without it? Attend this session and discover how practical application of accessibility and inclusion practices can improve your overall production process, audience development, and marketing strategies.









Janet Bailey is currently President of her own consulting practice, Janet Bailey Associates, which provides marketing, strategy, development, and organizational consulting services to arts and cultural organizations. Earlier in her career she worked as a consultant with McKinsey & Company in New York and Latin America and subsequently served in several line-management positions with the Times Mirror Corporation. She holds B.A. and M.B.A. degrees from Boston University and is on the faculty of BU’s graduate program in Arts Administration. She serves on the Boards of the Community Music Center of Boston and StageSource, and is currently President of the StageSource board.


Margaret Ann Brady, an actor/director/bon vivant, is a charter member of StageSource and serves on the StageSource board and executive committee. In addition to performing on Boston stages, she is the Creative Manager of The Freedom Trail Foundation's Scholars Program as well as a historical guide out on the trail itself, and is a longtime adjudicator and fan of the Mass. Educational Theater Guild. She's a proud member of Actors Equity and SAG-AFTRA. 


Anne Dunning became principal associate at consulting firm, ARTS Action Research, in 2004 after several years as administrative director of the Danny Grossman Dance Company in Toronto. She was founding chair of the Canadian Dance Assembly, chair of Dance/USA, a member of Dance/NYC’s advisory committee and is currently chair of freeDimensional. She has considerable experience as a facilitator, strategic planner, evaluator and educator. Anne studied biology at McGill University in Montreal, where she received a BSc in ecology, evolution and behavior. She lives in Boston with her husband, Gary, president and executive director of Celebrity Series of Boston.


Jim Grace is the Executive Director of the Arts & Business Council. Previously he was the Executive Director of the Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts of Massachusetts (VLA) from 1998 until 2008, when it merged with the A&BC. Jim has experience working with artists and arts organizations in the areas of publishing law, public art, copyright, trademark, nonprofit incorporation and mergers, negotiation training, and artist live/work and nonprofit board issues.  Jim was an adjunct professor for Boston University’s Masters in Arts Administration Program for over five years where he co-taught a course on Legal Issues in Arts Administration. In addition, Jim is a working author, book editor, and publishing attorney. He is the co-author of best selling The Worst Case Scenario Handbook: Golf. To date he has been involved in the publication of over eight books. Jim serves on the board of Associated Grant Makers and the Private Sector Council of Americans for the Arts. He is also a founding board member of the Arts Services Coalition and a former founding board member of the Fort Point Cultural Coalition. 


John Greiner-Ferris's plays have been produced in Boston, Cambridge, and Provincetown, Massachusetts, New York, Chicago, Boulder, Colorado, and Raleigh, North Carolina. Highland Center, Indiana was a semifinalist at the Eugene O'Neill Center's Summer Playwriting Conference. Turtles was a finalist at The Inkwell in Washington, D.C. as part of its Development Showcase and was accepted for the 2015 Great Plains Theatre Conference. John is a member of StageSource, the Dramatist Guild, the artistic director at Alley Cat Theater and co-founder of Boston Public Works Theater Company, a group of playwrights who are using the model established by 13P as a departure point to produce their own plays. He holds an MFA in playwriting from Boston University.

Charles Haugland manages Artistic Programs and Dramaturgy for the Huntington Theatre Company, and serves as rehearsal dramaturg on all mainstage productions. At the Huntington, he has dramaturged for writers including Lydia Diamond, Kirsten Greenidge, Ryan Landry, Melinda Lopez, Stephen Karam, Rosanna Yamagiwa Alfaro, and others. He was a 2009/2010 recipient of the TCG New Generations: Future Leaders grant for a two-year mentorship with Huntington artistic director Peter DuBois. He previously interned for Actors Theatre of Louisville/Humana Festival. His dramaturgy credits also include Company One.


Emily Hart is a Stage Manager, having worked in the Boston area for about 7 years. She was an ASM on Company One's 2012 production of LOVE PERSON by Aditi Kapil. She stage managed Wheelock Family Theatre's 2015 production of THE TASTE OF SUNRISE by Suzan Zeder. She is fluent in American Sign Language (ASL) and has been involved in the Boston area Deaf community for 15 years as a student, teacher and volunteer.


Kyle Hemingway Dickinson is an award-winning designer who has been working with Boston-area arts organizations for nearly 10 years. After graduating from Emerson College, he held full-time positions with the Handel and Haydn Society and Citi Performing Arts Center before going out on his own to pursue a full-time freelance career. His clients have ranged from Boston to Off-Broadway and comprised theater, opera, music, and visual art genres. Kyle also is the host of the Boston chapter of arts/hospitality group Opus Affair, where he plans a monthly arts fundraiser cocktail party known as the Punch Bowl Fund. 


Shawn LaCount is a proud co-founder of Company One Theatre where he has directed over 20 productions. Recent directorial credits include the regional premiere of EDITH CAN SHOOT THINGS AND HIT THEM by A. Rey Pamatmat; Annie Baker's THE FLICK (Elliot Norton Award); Kirsten Greenidge's SPLENDOR (world premiere); BENGAL TIGER AT THE BAGHDAD ZOO by Rajiv Joseph; THE ELABORATE ENTRANCE OF CHAD DEITY by Kristoffer Diaz (Elliot Norton Award); and Annie Baker's THE ALIENS (Elliot Norton Award). Shawn holds an MA Ed. in theatre Education from Clark University and an MFA in Directing from The University of Massachusetts, Amherst.


Nora Long is the associate artistic director at the Lyric Stage Company of Boston, and an artistic director of New Exhibition Room, a Boston-area fringe company that specializes in developing ensemble-based new work. She has worked with several Boston-area theatre companies as a director, writer, dramaturg, and translator including Bad Habit Productions, the Lyric Stage Company of Boston, the American Repertory Theatre, and Whistler in the Dark. She received her MFA in Dramaturgy from the American Repertory Theatre/ Moscow Art Theatre School Institute for Advanced Theatre Training at Harvard University and her BA from Sarah Lawrence College in theatre and Italian.


Caitlin Lowans is a the associate artistic director at Stoneham Theatre where she has directed over 20 productions; favorite Stoneham credits include Walking the Tightrope, Romeo and Juliet, William Inge’s Picnic, and the world-premiere musical Sunfish. In addition, she is also a freelance director in the Boston area, with a focus on new plays that create unique, specific and spectacular universes. Recent world premieres include: Ryan Landry's M and Psyched for the Huntington Theatre Company, as well as A. Nora Long’s Clytemnestriad and MJ Kaufman’s Outlaw Jean for FreshInk. Caitlin has found the Boston theatre community a wonderful and supportive home for the past decade; this fall, she will head west to pursue her MFA in Directing at Northwestern University.


Georgia Lyman is a proud native Bostonian. As a performer, she has worked on many stages throughout the Boston area over the last ten years. She began producing for her own theater company, Orfeo Group, garnering 3 Eliot Norton awards for Outstanding Fringe Production in 5 years. She is also the 2013 recipient of Best Solo Performance. She has worked extensively in film and television. She is currently the Artistic Director of Outside the Box, Boston's largest free performing arts festival, running July 14-19 on the Boston Common.


Michael Maso (Managing Director) has led the Huntington’s administrative and financial operations since 1982, producing more than 190 plays in partnership with three artistic directors and leading the Huntington’s ten-year drive to build the Stanford Calderwood Pavilion at the Boston Center for the Arts, which opened in September 2004. In recognition of these efforts, Boston Herald honored him as 2004’s Theatre Man of the Year. From 1997 to 2005 Mr. Maso served as the president of the League of Resident Theatres (LORT), an association of 70 of the country's major not-for-profit professional theatres. In 2005, he was named as one of a dozen members of the inaugural class of the Barr Fellows Program. He currently serves on the Boston Cultural Planning Steering Committee and previously served as a member of the board of directors of ArtsBoston; as a Board Member for Theatre Communications Group (TCG), the national service organization for not-for-profit theatre; as a site visitor, panelist, and panel chairman for the National Endowment for the Arts; as chairman of the Cultural and Scientific Directors Group; as a member of Mayor Menino’s Advisory Task Force for Cultural Planning; as a trustee of the Massachusetts Advocates for the Arts, Sciences, and Humanities (MAASH); as a board member of StageSource; as a member of the Boston Foundation’s Cultural Task Force; and as program consultant for the Arts Leadership Initiative of Business Volunteers for the Arts. He is the recipient of TCG’s 2012 Theatre Practitioner Award, the Huntington’s 2012 Wimberly Award, StageSource’s 2010 Theatre Hero Award, the 2005 Commonwealth Award (the state’s highest arts honor) in the category of Catalyst, and the 2000 Norton Prize for Sustained Excellence from the Boston Theatre Critics Association.


Walt McGough is a Playwriting Fellow at the Huntington, and a former Next Voices Fellow at New Rep. He has worked around the country with companies such as The Lark, the Huntington, Boston Playwrights Theatre, New Rep, Fresh Ink, Sideshow Theatre Company, Orfeo Group, Nu Sass Productions, and Chicago Dramatists. His play PATTERN OF LIFE won a Best New Play IRNE in 2015. He is a founding ensemble member of Chicago's Sideshow Theatre Company, currently serves on the staff at SpeakEasy Stage Company in Boston, and was previously the Company Manager at Chicago Dramatists. He holds a BA from the University of Virginia, and an MFA in Playwriting from Boston University. 


Lee Mikeska Gardner has completed her first season as Artistic Director of The Nora Theatre Company, where she directed Her Aching Heart and Grounded and performed the title role of Emilie: La Marquise du Chatelet Defends Her Life Tonight (Norton Award for Lead Actress, Small) as well as Claudia in BPT’s Chosen Child. An award winning director and actor from the Washington, D.C. area, favorite projects include performing Terry in Sideman, Florence Foster Jenkins in Souvenir both at 1st Stage, Clare in Tennessee Williams’s The Two-Character Play at Spooky Action, directing seasonally for a decade at Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company and serving as Associate Artistic Director with the Shenandoah Playwrights’ Retreat working on plays in development.


Kevin Mullins is a playwright and theatre artist from Boston. His play A Southern Victory was a finalist for the Eugene O'Neill National Playwrights Conference, a semi-finalist for the WordBRIDGE Playwrights Lab, and a finalist at PlayPenn. His plays have been presented or developed with Slant of Light Theatre, Flat Earth Theatre, Vagabond Theatre Group, Mill 6 Productions, Wax Wings Productions, Interim Writers, Fresh INK Theatre, and The International Anarchist Theatre Festival of Montreal. A devised piece he worked on, Blind Alley Guy, premiered at the Incubator Arts Project in NYC in June of 2011. He has participated in a Pataphysics workshop at The Flea and recently completed an MFA in dramatic writing from Carnegie Mellon University.


Cliff Odle has been a theatre arts practitioner for most of his life. He works as an actor, playwright, and director. He has also lectured on a variety of theatre topics at places such as UMass Boston, Wheelock College, and Emerson College. Among his areas of focus are new playwright collaborations, Educational Theatre, Historical Theatre, and Political Theatre. As an actor Cliff has worked onstage for Speakeasy Stage, The Huntington Theatre Company, Wheelock Family Theatre, Company One and several others. He has written works for educational companies such as Theatre Espresso, Deana’s Educational Theatre Company, and The Freedom Trail Foundation. 


Nicholas Peterson has worked on marketing and internet strategies for arts, non-profit organizations, and small businesses since the dot-com boom of the late 1990s/early 2000s. Since 2003, he has been based in Boston, working for New Repertory Theatre, the American Repertory Theatre, consulting, and working on his own projects. He has presented at TCG’s Annual Conference, the Boston Theatre Conference, the INTIX, and Value Of Presenting – Arts Research in North America at Northeastern University. He has also been on panels at Harvard, Emerson, and Southern NH University and been a guest lecturer at Simmons College. He is a graduate of Antioch College and holds a M.S. in Internet Strategy Management from the Graduate Center of Marlboro College. 


Bridget Kathleen O’Leary is the Associate Artistic Director at New Repertory Theatre where she has directed productions of Scenes from an Adultery, Muckrakers, Pattern of Life, Lungs, Collected Stories, DollHouse, boom, and Fool for Love. Other directing credits: The Other Place, for The Nora Theatre Company and Underground Railway Theater; Recent Tragic Events and Aunt Dan and Lemon, for Whistler in the Dark; Reconsidering Hanna(h) and The Devil’s Teacup at Boston Playwrights’ Theatre; Since 2012, Bridget has curated the Next Voices Reading Series for New Repertory Theatre. She is the Chair of the Literary Committee for the National New Play Network. Bridget received her MFA in directing at Boston University.


Beth Peters is the Producing Artistic Director of The Accessible Theatre, an organization dedicated to increasing disability access and inclusion in Boston theatres. Beth is also a Boston Public School Teacher, focusing on inclusion-based drama. She has previously worked for organizations such as Wheelock Family Theatre, New Repertory Theatre, Watertown Children’s Theatre, Watertown High School, Belmont Hill School, the Boston Health Commission, and The Learning Center for the Deaf, among many others.  


Christopher S. Robinson has practiced as a Performing Arts ASL Interpreter since 1994 and he currently coordinates ASL Interpretation for Boston University School of Theatre. He is a Certified Facilitator in the LEGO® Serious Play™methodology. “As the Coordinator of Outreach and Training, I am responsible to facilitate the mission of the Office of Disability Services by promoting access in the online classroom, residential and student life environments. Captioning mandates and other access for public and instructional media such as web pages, videos and classroom materials are specific areas of focus."   


Cheryl D. Singleton moved from NY to Boston in 1996 and joined the theater community here soon after. She was most recently seen as Mrs. Dickson in Intimate Apparel at the Lyric Stage. Last year she stretched her writing chops in the “Actors Write Plays” workshop with Melinda Lopez, made possible by StageSource and the Huntington. Local credits include work at the A.R.T., Huntington, New Rep, Commonwealth Shakespeare, Zeitgeist Stage, Company One, Boston Playwrights’, Queer Soup, Ryan Landry & the Gold Dust Orphans and ImprovBoston. Cheryl is a proud member of AEA, SAG-AFTRA, and StageSource.


Kate Snodgrass is Artistic Director of Boston Playwrights' Theatre and the Elliot Norton Award-winning Boston Theater Marathon. The author of the Actors’ Theatre of Louisville’s Heideman Award-winning play "Haiku," her plays have won two IRNE Awards and a national Steinberg nomination. She was acknowledged by StageSource in 2001 as a "Theatre Hero," and she earned an Elliot Norton Award for Sustained Excellence in 2012.
Kate is a member of A.F.T.R.A., A.E.A., and the Dramatists' Guild.


Laura Sullivan has been a communicator from the very start of things. A great storyteller and funny as hell, Laura’s love of language, a great story, and loving people were only a few of the reasons behind creating Drive PR + C. From Shakespeare to health and beauty to financial services, Laura’s career has been a varied one with each position molding her current role as Drive’s manager of mirth. She is energized and passionate about guiding small businesses through the changing world of public relations and communication by creating simple strategies for success. Things that keep her ticking on a daily basis: language (both poetic and foul), amazing food, 18 holes, traveling, a full DVR, a perfect pour of scotch & porcelain owls.


Spiro Veloudos, now in his 17th season as Producing Artistic Director of the Lyric Stage,
directed Sweeney Todd this season, and directed last season’s multi award winning Into the Woods, One Man, Two Guvnors, and Death of a Salesman. Spiro received the Lifetime Achievement in the Arts Award from Salem State College and he was the recipient of the 2006 Elliot Norton Prize for Sustained Excellence. Along with his multiple awards from the Elliot Norton Committee and the Independent Reviewers of New England, Spiro received StageSource’s Theatre Hero Award in 2003, which he considers an honor because it is bestowed by the theatre community. He serves as the president for the Producers’ Association of New England Area Theatres, and is adjunct faculty in Performing Arts at Emerson College.


Summer Williams has been with Company One Theatre since its inception in 1998. An active member of the Board of Directors, Summer is a producer, director and educator for Company One Theatre. Her most recent directing credits include INTIMATE APPAREL at Lyric Stage Company of Boston. Ms. Williams has also directed for the Boston Playwrights' Theatre, Clark University, Brandeis University, The Theatre Offensive and Huntington Theatre Company. She is a teacher of drama and director at Brookline High School and holds a BA in Theatre, as well as a MA Ed. in Theatre and Urban Education. Ms. Williams serves as a member of the Board of Directors of both StageSource and The Coolidge Corner Theatre.
